Le Manhattan Bistro: A Diamond Among The Coal Region

If you are from or live in NEPA, it is often [unfairly] said there is nothing to do, nowhere to go, no culture to experience. But among the ashes of the coal mining era when growth, prosperity, and abundance abounded, lies a diamond, Le Manhattan Bistro.

Ironically, the building in which Le Manhattan Bistro resides was formerly a bank, where so many of the coal industry’s riches were held and protected. Archives of The Chronicle maintain, “A new bank is to be opened in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., in a few months. It is to be called the South Side Bank, and is to have a capital of $75,000.”

That proclamation was March 10, 1906. Today, the space is a transformed yet preserved one that Le Manhattan Bistro is proud to call home. The walls feel as if they are yearning to speak the tales of two cities, the Wilkes-Barre of the industrial age and the resurgence, rebirth, and promise of the Wilkes-Barre we know and love today.
